1st LD-Writethru: Nine killed in central Philippine coal mine collapse

Xinhua, July 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least nine people were killed and six others were missing after a coal mine collapsed in Semirara Island in the central Philippine province of Antique on Friday due to heavy monsoon rain, said the country's Department of Energy.

The department said initial investigation shows that the accident took place at 3:30 a.m. at the north edge of the Panian Mine site.

Rosario Cabrera, director of Regional Office of Civil Defense, said a portion of the mining site of the Semirara Mining and Power Company collapsed due to a landslide.

She said there were a total of 13 workers at the collapsed mining site when the landslide happened and four of them were able to escape.

Cabrera added that three bodies have been recovered while search operations are ongoing to retrieve the remaining six dead bodies.

Zenaida Monsada, officer-in-charge of Department of Energy, has ordered operation suspension at the site. Endi
