The Bolivian government announced Thursday that its security forces are keeping a close watch on the country's borders following the escape of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera, a drug lord, from prison cell in Mexico.
The country's General Prosecutor is also preparing a report for Mexico on El Chapo's son Jesus, who briefly lived in the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz in 2011.
Bolivia's anti-drug chief, Felipe Caceres, said that the two countries are constantly exchanging information about Guzman Loera, a leader of the Sinaloa cartel.
Caceres, who is also the Minister of Social Defence and Controlled Substances, said that Bolivia had also been advised by Mexican authorities to take measures to prevent Guzman from seeking to set himself up in the country.
He also added that rumors continue to swirl linking Oscar Nina, a former police chief and ex-director general of the Special Force to Combat and Control Narcotics Trafficking, with El Chapo's son Jesus.
These links are part of an investigation into when Jesus lived in Santa Cruz in 2011, where he took flying lessons and maintained links to certain members of the Bolivian police.
According to the Bolivian Ministry of the Interior, Jesus infiltrated the flight school with a fake Bolivian ID and took lessons to help him in his drug trafficking activities. "We are not specifically investigating this man (Jesus) but we are seeking to clarify whether any of the suspected links to the Sinaloa cartel truly existed," said Caceres. Endite
