Six drown as migrant boat sinks in sea off western Turkey

Xinhua, July 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least six illegal immigrants drowned and one remains missing as a boat sank in the Aegean Sea off western Turkey Thursday, private Dogan news agency reported.

The rubber boat, which was carrying illegal immigrants heading for the Midilli island of Greece, sank in the Aegean Sea off Ayvacik town of the Canakkale province of western Turkey, leaving six immigrants dead including four children and one still missing, according to the report.

Among the rescued were ten immigrants, including four women and two children, said the report, adding that the rescued immigrants were transported to Ezine State Hospital for treatment.

Turkey, strategically located between Asia and Europe, has become a major transit point for Middle Eastern and Asian migrant refugees fleeing poverty or conflict in their home countries.

The Aegean Sea is one of the most frequently used routes for migrants attempting to reach European countries. Endit
