Philippines marks APEC meeting with extra holidays

The Philippine government on Tuesday declared Nov. 18 and 19 this year as special non-working days in Metro Manila, the country's capital, in observance of the Asia-Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) Economic Leaders Meeting.

Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said Executive Paquito Ochoa issued on July 13, on behalf of the president, Proclamation No. 1072 which declared Nov. 18 and 19, which falls on a Wednesday and Thursday, as special non-working days in the capital.

Earlier proposals were to have a five-day special non-working holiday.

"The APEC is an annual regional forum attended by world leaders that seek to leverage on the growing inter-dependence of the Asia- Pacific," Coloma said in explaining the significance of the APEC.

The Philippines is hosting APEC this year and leaders from member economies are expected to attend the meeting that would be held in Metro Manila in November.

Other APEC-ministerial meetings had been held in different parts of the country like in Boracay, Tagaytay and Bacolod since early this year. Endi
