Feature: Death of teen by alleged molesters sparks outrage in Bangladesh

Xinhua, July 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Photos and videos of the horrendous scene and the reported name of the teenager, Rajon, are trending heavily on social media sites coming out of Bangladesh, but protests are no longer limited to the Internet.

People across the country in protest to the murder of the teenager have now taken to the streets and are demanding capital punishment for the culprits.

The criminals allegedly molested the boy themselves and recorded the heinous act and uploaded it online. The video also depicted the sick pleasure the alleged served from the molestation and murder.

The 13-year-old boy was beaten to death on July 8 by the culprits who filmed themselves laughing and jeering as they carried out the vicious attack.

Tied to a pole, the boy screamed for help, cried for water and begged for his life.

But his aggressors showed no mercy; simply laughing and making jokes while filming the barbaric scene to post online.

They kept beating him, at times knocking him down to the ground, and asking how he would like to take a beating.

When the boy howled for water, they told him to drink his own sweat.

The aggressors accused the boy of trying to steal a bicycle rickshaw van in Sylhet, some 241 km northeast of the capital Dhaka. Relatives said in failing to molest the teenager, the culprits hatched the plot to kill him.

After the killing, the culprits were going to take the boy's lifeless body on a microbus to dump it in a secluded place, but the locals found them and managed to catch one of them.

Another attacker was detained in Saudi Arabia.

The Bangladeshi community in Saudi Arabia has helped police catch the man who was seen most active in beating the kid in the widely-circulated video.

Two days after the murder, Kamrul, who was seen hitting the boy with a stick in the feet, joints of his legs and shoulders and in the head, fled the country.

Rajon's mother Lubna Akhtar said her son left home early in the morning to sell vegetables as his father Sheikh Azizur Rahman, a microbus driver, was out on a trip.

As Rajon did not return home all day, Lubna went to the police station that night to file a general report. There, she was told about a boy's body recovered earlier in the day. To her horror, she found it was her son.

Rajon, the eldest of Lubna's two sons, studied up to class-IV. After dropping out, he started selling vegetables to support the family.

A case was filed with Jalalabad Police Station accusing Muhit and Kamrul, their accomplice Ali Haider, 34, watchman Moyna Mia alias Boro Moyna, 45, and seven other unnamed people.

Rajon's uncle Omar Faruk said the culprits brought false allegations of theft against the teen to hide the real fact of this premeditated murder.

"We have come to know later that Moyna was angry with Rajon because he rejected the watchman's inappropriate proposal. Expatriate Kamrul through Moyna wanted to manage Rajon but the teenager refused."

He said they killed him in fear that he may disclose their offer to others.

The sickening video showing the young boy being viciously tortured shook the nation to its core and stirred outcries on social networks and the mainstream media, with the 28-minute clip and still images going viral.

Rajon reportedly died of a brain hemorrhage and some 64 other injuries were found on his body.

State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told reporters none will be spared. The culprits will be tried as per the country 's existing law, he said. Endi
