Xinhua, July 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

The United States beat Germany 84-77 in the second overtime of men's basketball final at Gwangju Universiade here on Monday.

After Mathis Moenninghoff shot the first two points for Germany, Perry Ellis had seven points to lead American's 14-point streak to build the lead.

Team USA began to slow down in the late first quarter and the second. Germany tried to attack in the painted zone and the strategy worked.

Konstantin Klein hit the three-pointer to cut the deficit down to only two points, 40-42. Wayne Selden responded with a alley-oop. Kevin Bright had a crucial three pointer to help Germany surpass by 54-53. Frank Mason scored one point behind the free-throw line to help the Americans tie at 54-54.

Both teams exchanged lead in the early fourth quarter until Germany's Lo Maodo and Niklas Geske hit two to lead by 64-59. They were still 66-64 up before Frank Mason lifted the team to overtime with two free-throws.

In the breathtaking first overtime, it's again Mason who had a layup at the last moment to help America tie with 73-73 to continue.

After Moenninghoff helped the team lead with 77-75 in the second overtime. Americans stormed nine points with a three pointer and six free throws. Germany gained nothing besides two turnovers. Wayne Selden threw the ball to the audience, Team USA became the champion at Gwangju Universiade.

Lo Maodo led Germany with 16 points while Wayne Selden had a game-high 22 points for the United States.

In the bronze medal game earlier today, Russia defeated Brazil 80-72. Endi
