Two killed in latest Afghan targeted attacks

Xinhua, July 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two persons have been killed in the latest targeted attacks in the militancy-hit Afghanistan, authorities said on Monday.

In one attack, a police officer was shot dead while he was on duty at a security checkpoint in Herat city, capital of western Herat city earlier on Monday.

"Two terrorists riding a motorcycle opened fire on a police officer in Darwaza-e-Kandahar locality at around 09:00 a.m. local time Monday, killing him on the spot," provincial police Chief General Abdul Majid told Xinhua.

The attacker fled the scene and an investigation was launched into the incident, the police official added.

On Sunday evening, the militants shot and killed Sarwar Ahmadzai, a local leader and a pro-government figure of Jalriz district of eastern Wardak province.

"Ahmadzai was kidnapped along a main road in Jalriz district seven days ago. He was killed late Sunday and his body was recovered in the neighboring Nirkh district on Monday morning," the provincial government said in a statement.

The civilians considered to be supporting the government, civilian government employees, religious leaders, tribal elders and persons involved in peace and reconciliation efforts came under attack in a series of targeted killings mostly claimed by Taliban.

More than 970 civilians were killed and nearly 1,960 others were wounded in conflicts and Taliban-led insurgency in the first four months of 2015, according to figures released by the UN mission in the country. Endit
