Roundup: Host S. Korea enlarges lead on medal table at Universiade

Host South Korea won four gold medals on Saturday to consolidate its leading position on medal table at the Gwangju University Games.

Lee Jeongeun totalled 279 (9 under-par) for the women's individual golf title. She also won the team gold together with Jeong Juwon and Kim Ahin with a total score of 567 shots.

Kim Minseok and Jeon Jihee teamed up to win the women's mixed doubles table tennis gold medal, beating Chiang Hung-chieh and Chen Szu-yu of Chinese Taipei 4-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8).

South Korea's fourth gold medal of Saturday came from tennis as Han Nalae and Lee Sora won the women's doubles title after beating Hsu Chieh-yu and Lee Ya-hsuan of Chinese Taipei in the final.

South Korea now leads second placed Russia by 6 gold medals with 35 gold, 26 silver and 21 bronze medals. Russia ranks second with 29 gold, 33 silver and 40 bronze medals. China also has 29 gold medals to its credit but ranks third due to less silver and bronze medals.

China only won one gold medal on Saturday through Zhang Hua who took the title of women's taekwondo 62kg category.

Track and field competitions were the main attraction on Saturday with 9 gold medals on stake but China's athletic team slowed down their pace, pocketing nothing from four finals they participated in at Gwangju World Cup Stadium.

Luo Na from Tianjin Normal University recorded her year best in the women's hammer throw final. But her 67.11m performance ranked fourth while Hanna Skydan from Azerbaijan winning the event with 70.67m.

Wang Wupin missed the bronze by only six centimeters in women's triple jump final, which was won by Ekaterina Koneva of Russia with 14.60m for a 74cm margin.

Nikita Filippov of Kazakhstan took the gold medal in men's pole vault while Kristina Maki of the Czech Republic took only 16 minutes and 3.29 seconds to finish women's 5,000m.

German Lena Urbaniak had her best performance ever by throwing 18.00m in women's shot put for the title. Her compatriot Christian Martin Grau triumphed in men's 3,000m steeplechase, his 8:31.55 performance marked his personal best this year.

A total of 34 gold medals will be up for grab on Sunday, including 14 from track and field, five from badminton, five from tennis and four from taekwondo. Endi
