Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed welcome Friday over the planned enlargement of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and called on the member states to uphold the "Shanghai Spirit" for common development.

Xi and other SCO leaders passed a resolution Friday on starting the procedures of granting India and Pakistan full membership of the organization at the 15th SCO summit in the southwestern Russian city of Ufa. (China-SCO Enlargement)

UFA, Russia -- Russian President Vladimir Putin said here Friday that Russia expects Chinese companies to make "significant contribution" to the development of Russia's Siberia and its Far East region.

"I think that Chinese companies could make a significant contribution to the development plans and objectives that we set for ourselves in the region (of Siberia and the Far East)," Putin said at a press conference after the BRICS and SCO summits concluded here in the southwestern Russian city of Ufa. ABUJA -- At least 12 people have been confirmed killed in Nigeria's Delta area, where a pipeline under the maintenance of an Italy-based multinational oil firm had exploded, an official statement said Friday.

The incident occurred Thursday, as maintenance crew of the Italian oil firm, Eni, were working on a faulty pipeline on the Tebidaba-Clough Creek line near the town of Azuzuama in Nigeria's southern Bayelsa State, the oil firm said. (Nigeria-Explosion)

TOKYO -- Over 9,000 scholars have signed up in an appeal issued by a newly formed scholar association opposing the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's efforts to ram through a series of unconstitutional security-related bills, according to the group's founder on Friday at a press conference.

Manabu Sato, professor at Gakushuin University and Emeritus professor at the University of Tokyo, said at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan that the academics who signed up in the appeal share the value that Japan should keep following its war-renouncing commitment written in the country's Constitution since the end of World War II. NEW DELHI -- India and Pakistan Friday decided to revive the stalled dialogue process and find ways to expedite trial of the Mumbai attack case at talks between Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in Ufa, Russia, said local media.
