EU pledges 450 mln euros to Ebola affected countries

Xinhua, July 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Commission will provide approximately 450 million euros to support the recovery of the three countries most affected by Ebola, namely Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, the EU Delegation to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva said on Friday.

According to a press release from the EU delegation in Geneva, Sierra Leone will receive 171.4 million euros, Liberia 121 million euros and Guinea 148.9 million euros, while the other 8 million euros will be given to all countries affected by Ebola for multi-country projects.

"The support will help the countries' long term recovery, and will be spent on programmes in the area of healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, education, sanitation, macro-economic stability and transport," the spokesperson of the EU delegation in Geneva said.

According to the EU delegation, this new funding will bring the European Commission's total support towards fighting the Ebola epidemic to 869 million euros.

"The emergency is not over until we are down to zero Ebola cases. With some new cases in Liberia we remain on high alert and our determination to eradicate Ebola is stronger than ever. Now is not the time to pull back," Christos Stylianides, EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management and EU Ebola coordinator, was cited as saying. Endit
