Argentina leads FIFA world ranking

Argentina steps onto the first place for the first time in seven years in the FIFA world rankings which was released on Thursday.

Despite Argentina's defeat to Chile in the Copa America final on Saturday, the South American team climbed two places to the top of the rankings one year after losing against Germany in the World Cup 2014 in Brazil.

With 1,473 total points, Argentina's promotion means that previous table leaders Germany and Belgium were demoted and currently rank in second and third place respectively.

Chile's victory in the Copa America meant they went up 8 positions and now currently rank in 11th place in the table.

Another big jumper was Wales. They moved up 12 positions after a good run of play in the UEFA Cup 2016 qualifiers. The team have been ranked in 10th place, the highest position Wales have ever been ranked.

In Latin America, Colombia (fourth) and Brazil (sixth) remain in the top 10 despite their disappointing performances in Copa America 2015.

However Mexico did not have such success in this month's ranking as it fell 17 places from 23rd position to 40th after a seven-match spell without a win. Endi
