Belgian Flanders region to install neutral washrooms for transgendered people

Xinhua, July 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Flanders, the Dutch-speaking region in the north of Belgium and partly in Brussels, intends to install neutral toilets in official buildings, the Flemish daily Het Nieuwsblad reported on Thursday quoting the Flemish Minister for Equal Opportunities Liesbeth Homans.

"These toilets are an added-value for the welfare of transgender at their place of work," she said in response to a parliamentary hearing.

These toilets aim at people who feel woman in a man's body or vice versa, and therefore begin a gender change procedure.

Cavaria, the association for the defense of LGBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender) welcomes this initiative. "This will avoid awkward situations when a transgender in the change process must go to the toilet when he/she is not yet fully a woman or a man," said the association.

A special logo could be displayed on washroom doors. Endit
