EU's food regulator updates DRVs for vitamin E

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), or the European Union (EU)'s food regulatory body, said on Thursday that it has updated dietary reference values (DRVs) for vitamin E as a-tocopherol and cobalamin (vitamin B12).

For vitamin E as a-tocopherol, the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) of EFSA set adequate intakes (AIs) of 13 mg per day for men and 11 mg per day for women.

Moreover, the AIs of vitamin E as a-tocopherol for infants and children range from 5-13 mg per day.

For cobalamin, the Panel set AIs of 4 microgram (mcg) per day for adults (18 years and above), and of between 1.5 and 4 mcg per day for infants and children.

This was part of EFSA's updating of nutrient and energy requirements set by the European Commission in 1993, said the EFSA. Endit
