Xinhua, July 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

An Indian military trooper was killed by militants in a gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Thursday.

The gunfight broke out at village Barbug-Imamsahib in Shopian district, about 60 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Last evening a contingent of Indian military cordoned off village Barbug here on specific intelligence inputs suggesting the presence of militants in a locality. As troopers were making the advance movement, it came under heavy fire, during which a trooper was wounded," a senior police official posted in Shopian told Xinhua.

"Though the trooper was immediately removed to hospital, but he succumbed to his wounds there after some time," he added.

Officials said the gunfire between the two sides lasted for a brief time.

Militant groups are engaged in a guerrilla war with Indian troops in the region since 1989. Endi
