Sri Lankan former president signs nomination papers for polls

Former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Thursday signed the nomination papers to contest key Parliament elections under the opposition United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA), former Parliament opposition leader Nimal Siripala de Silva said.
Rajapaksa will be contesting the August 17 Parliament elections from the Kurunegala District in North Western Sri Lanka.
Several other UPFA members also signed their nomination papers, Nimal Siripala de Silva.
The UPFA consists of several political parties including the Sri Lanka Freedom Party which is led by currnt President Maithripala Sirisena.
Nimal Siripala de Silva said that the ruling United National Party (UNP) was expecting a major split in the SLFP and now they are disappointed as there was no such split. Endi
