Australian live cattle exports set new record

Xinhua, July 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Live cattle exports from Australia's Northern Territory (NT) have set a new record, with senior Australian government officials saying the industry would play an integral in the development of the region.

The NT government revealed on Tuesday a record 613,473 head of cattle were exported from Darwin Port in the 2014/15 financial year, a 51-percent increase on the previous financial year's record of 406,055 head of cattle.

Australia's Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss told local media on Tuesday that the growth of the live export industry in the NT had been "spectacular" and would be a big part of the region's development.

Truss is currently in Darwin for talks with NT Chief Minister Adam Giles about the Australian government's white paper on developing northern Australia.

"We know that when northern Australia is strong so is our continent, and therefore investments made in the north are good for the country as a whole," Truss said.

The live cattle export industry is worth about 230 million Australian dollars (172.3 million U.S. dollars) per year for the NT economy. Endi
