Kiwi new vehicle sales hit record in June

New Zealand's economy might be heading for a slowdown, but new vehicle sales hit a new record last month, the Motor Industry Association (MIA) said Tuesday.

"After a flat May, the new vehicle market once again took off in June with 13,030 new vehicles registered, the strongest month of June on record and the fifth strongest month of all time," MIA chief executive officer David Crawford said in a statement.

"The previous highest single month was way back in August 1984 with 13,157 vehicles sold. The highest single month was in July 1984 with 13,983 vehicles registered."

In the year to date, new vehicle sales were up 6 percent, or 3, 435 vehicles, on the same period last year.

"The sales of new vehicles remains strong despite other economic indicators showing the economy may be flattening out. If the current rate of sales continues, we could see (annual) new vehicle registrations break the 130,000 barrier for the first time, " said Crawford.

New passenger car sales hit 9,021 in June, up 504 units year on year, while new commercial vehicle sales were up by just seven vehicles to 4,009.

Toyota remained the overall market leader in June with 23 percent of the market, followed by Holden with 11 percent and Ford with 10 percent. Endi
