First group of Cuban athletes travel to Toronto for Pan-American Games

The first group of Cuban athletes on Sunday travelled to Toronto, Canada, to participate in the Pan-American Games slated for July 10 to 26, local media reported.

According to a report from the National Information Agency, these athletes come from 14 sports including diving, synchronized swimming, badminton, boxing, canoeing, artistic gymnastics, judo, weightlifting, rowing, softball, tennis, archery, triathlon and sailing.

Cuba will participate in 31 sports and for the first time women accounted for the majority with 231 athletes.

The Cuban delegation for Pan-American Games includes 461 athletes, who will seek to remain second in the medals tally.

Idalys Ortiz, judo Olympic and world champion, is the most outstanding woman athlete, and Asley Gonzalez, judo world champion and silver-medal winner in London 2012, is one of the men's stars.

Other outstanding athletes include boxing world champions Lazaro Alvarez and Julio Cesar La Cruz, as well as Roniel Iglesias, Olympic champion in London 2012. Endi
