Death toll from Philippine ferry mishap climbs to 61

Xinhua, July 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two more bodies were recovered from the ill-fated motor banca that sank off central Philippine city of Ormoc, bringing the number of fatalities to 61, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Sunday.

The PCG failed to tell anymore the number of missing passengers from M/B Nivrana-B as it appeared that the number of the boat's passengers already exceeded the 178 capacity.

The number of survivors reached to 145.

The boat was battered by huge waves and subsequently capsized about 200 meters off the port at around 12: 15 p.m. local time on Thursday. It was on the way to Camotes island in Cebu.

Police filed murder complaints against the ferry owner and 19 crew members.

Investigation has been ongoing to determine the cause of the incident. Endi
