More foreigners stay overnight in Icelandic hotels in May

The number of foreigners who stayed overnight in Icelandic hotels registered a year-on-year increase of 28 percent in May, official figures showed on Friday.

According to statistics issued by Statistics Iceland, the number of people who paid for accommodations in Icelandic hotels rose to 216,500 in May, a 20 percent increase from the figure of May 2014.

Meanwhile, foreign tourists accounted for 85 percent of the people who stayed in Icelandic hotels in May, up 28 percent compared with the figure in May 2014. The number of Icelandic citizens staying overnight in hotels decreased 12 percent over the same period.

Foreigners who stayed overnight in Iceland in May were mostly residents from the United States, Germany and Britain.

In the last twelve months, from June 2014 until May 2015, overnight stays in hotels were 2,463,500 which is an increase of around 14 percent compared with the same period in the previous year. Endit
