Tajikistan withdraws most of delegation to Gwangju Universiade for passport fraud case

Xinhua, July 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Gwangju organizers' ambition of hosting an Universiade with the largest Universiade family suffered a blow as Tajikistan has withdrawn the majority of its delegation in light of a recent passport fraud case.

The organizing committee of Gwangju Universiade said Tajikistan has cancelled the trip for 67 of its 73 athletes and officials for the competition. Three athletes in taekwondo and three officials arrived earlier and they will remain in South Korea.

According to the organizers, six foreigners arrived in South Korea with forged passports under names of Tajik delegates on June 28. Tajikistan is taking responsibility for the incident and cited "complicated internal matters" for the decision.

Of the six foreigners with fake IDs, three have been deported to their home country. The other three remain loose in South Korea.

Tajikistan had been scheduled to compete in nine sports at the Gwangju Summer University Games. Endi
