Holocaust victims remembered at memorial in Riga

Xinhua, July 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

A commemorative event for Latvia's Holocaust victims was held on Friday at a memorial constructed at the ruins of the Great Choral Synagogue in Riga, which was burned down during the Second World War, local media reported.

Latvian President Andris Berzins, Parliament Speaker Inara Murniece, Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma and Riga Vice Mayor Andris Ameriks, as well as several parliamentarians and Ombudsman Juris Jansons were among the approximately 200 people attending the event.

People placed flowers and candles on the ruins of the former synagogue in remembrance of the Jews killed in Latvia during the Holocaust.

Latvia remembers victims of the Holocaust on July 4, the date on which in 1941 local Nazi supporters burned down the Great Choral Synagogue in Riga together with some 300 people inside. Over 70,000 Jews were killed in Nazi-occupied Latvia from 1941 to 1945. Enditem
