Tokyo stocks open sharply higher in early trading after overseas equity gains

Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher in early trading Thursday as investor sentiment was boosted by overnight gains in European and U.S. stock markets.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 232.85 points, or 1.15 percent, from Wednesday to 20,562.17. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 17.00 points, or 1.04 percent, to 1,653.41.

Gainers were led by insurance, construction and transport equipment issues. Endi
