EU grants citizenship to almost 1 mln persons in 2013

In 2013, around 985,000 persons acquired citizenship of a member state of the European Union (EU), up by 20 percent compared with 2012, Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU, issued Wednesday.

Of the total number of persons obtaining the citizenship of one of the EU member states in 2013, 89 percent were citizens of non-EU countries.

Moroccans continued to be main recipients with 86,500 persons obtaining European citizenship, of which 84 percent acquired citizenship of Spain, Italy or France.

They were followed by citizens of India, Turkey, Colombia, Albania and Ecuador as main groups acquiring citizenship in EU in 2013 .

It also showed that Romanians and Poles were the two largest groups of EU citizens acquiring citizenship of another EU member state. Endit
