China stocks plunged Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index falling more than 3 percent in the afternoon trading.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended higher on Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 23.69 points, or 1.14 percent, to 2,097.89 at the close. Trading volume stood at 468.23 million shares worth 5.8 trillion won (5.2 billion U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- Tokyo shares ended higher on Wednesday as sentiment here was boosted by optimism over Japan's economic outlook, but concerns over a possible Greek deficit default also weighed on the market.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 93.59 points, or 0. 46 percent, from Tuesday at 20,329.32.

SYDNEY -- Australian stocks shook off the Greek-IMF load default to start the new Australian financial year strong.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index rose 1.04 percent, to 5,515.7 points, while the broader All Ordinaries index lifted 1.01 percent, to 5,506 points.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.14 percent higher on Wednesday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index increased by 10. 65 points to 7575.15. The all-share index went up by 10.78 points, or 0.25 percent, to 4330.37.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 591.5 points on Wednesday, down 1.55 points, or 0.26 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 133.315 million shares worth 2.208 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (101.9 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange. Prices of 91 stocks went up, 123 stocks fell down, while 67 stocks remained unchanged.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX- Index, closed at 85.25 points on Wednesday, up 0.31 points, or 0. 36 percent, against the previous trading session.

A total of 40.247 million shares worth 511.176 billion Vietnamese dong (23.66 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Wednesday, a decrease of 32.34 percent in volume and 27.94 percent in value against the previous trading session.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) up 7.13 points, or 0. 21 percent, to close at 3,324.46. A total of 908 million shares changed hands with turnover of 924 million Singapore dollars (689 million U.S. dollars).

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Wednesday.
