Dozens injured during clashes in south Lebanon

Xinhua, July 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Heavy clashes erupted in the early hours of Wednesday in the coastal southern city of al-Saadiyat, leaving dozens of people injured, the state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported.

Clashes erupted on Wednesday morning between supporters of al-Mustaqbal movement and the Hezbollah-affiliated Resistance Brigades. The wounded were taken to the Rafic Hariri University Hospital.

"The army was deployed heavily and cordoned off the area erecting temporary checkpoints as cautious calm prevailed," an army communique by the Guidance Directorate said.

Troops also carried out raids in the region in search for the assailants, the communique added.

Al-Mustaqbal movement, a mainly Sunni group led by former Prime Minister Saad Hariri, is a staunch opponent to the Shiite militant party of Hezbollah's involvement in the Syrian crisis. Endit
