Cote d'Ivoire beefs up security after Mali terrorist attack

Xinhua, July 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cote d'Ivoire has reinforced military deployment along its border with Mali following Sunday's terrorist attack in the latter, Government Spokesman Bruno Kone has said.

"Our security forces have been deployed to the north. We have taken measures to avert any terrorist attack," Kone said.

On Sunday, armed men suspected of being jihadists attacked Mali's town of Fakola which is situated some 15 km from the Cote d'Ivoire border.

The assailants attacked the town's administrative and security infrastructures and ransacked the offices of the gendarmerie as well as that of the local administrator, Malian authorities confirmed.

They took control of a section of the town before being chased away by Mali's armed forces.

The Malian government has announced increased deployment of security forces in the region to carry out a vast operation.

The attack followed Saturday's attack in Nara, a Malian town neighbouring Mauritania, which left 12 people dead, among them nine assailants and three Malian soldiers. Endi
