Mali welcomes extension of MINUSMA mandate

The Mali government on Tuesday welcomed the extension of the mandate of the UN Integrated Multidimensional Mission for Stabilization of Mali (MINUSMA) until June 30, 2016.

A decision in this regard was taken unanimously on Monday by members of the United Nations Security Council.

"The decision marks a renewed desire by the international community to help Mali overcome the current political crisis," the government statement said.

The government expressed its deep appreciation to the Security Council members and the entire international community for the adoption of the resolution and for continued efforts to restore peace, security and stability in the country.

The decision to renew MINUSMA's mandate came just ten days after the signing of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali between the government and armed groups in the north.

"Mali government wishes to reaffirm its desire to cooperate with the international community to ensure full implementation of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement in Mali," the statement concluded. Endi
