Xinhua, June 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Benin's population has passed the 10 million mark, the final results of the fourth population census that were released on Monday in Cotonou have shown.

The census which was conducted by the National Institute for Statistics and Economic Analysis (INSAE) in May 2013, showed that Benin had experienced rapid population growth.

During the third census carried out in 2002, Benin's population stood at 6.7 million.

"The results show that between the period 2002-2013, the annual population growth rate stood at 3.5 percent, slightly higher than the 3.25 percent witnessed between 1992-2002," INSAE report noted.

According to INSAE, this population growth reflected the relative socioeconomic and political stability witnessed in Benin in the last few years.

With 10,008,749 people, Benin's population density has risen to 87.2 people per square kilometer in 2013, against 29 people in 1979, 43 in 1992 and 59 in 2002. Endi
