One Jordanian was killed and four others were injured when mortar shells from Syria fell into the town of Ramtha, a security official said Thursday.

The mortar shells from Syria hit houses, a school and a commercial area in Ramtha, a Jordanian town bordering Syria, the security source told Xinhua, adding that a 23-year old man was killed in the shelling.

The four injured, listed in fair condition, are being treated.

An official source said the mortar shelling came amid heavy fighting is neighboring Syria.

The Jordan Armed Forces said it was trying to identify the source of mortar shells and studying how to respond, state-run Petra news agency reported. Endit
