Drone from Gaza crashes on Israeli side of border

Xinhua, June 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

A drone crashed on the Israeli side of the Gaza border fence on Thursday afternoon, an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson confirmed to Xinhua.

The IDF said the drone was launched from the Gaza Strip and that the Israeli military had detected it in the Gaza airspace.

Israel deployed air force jets to intercept the craft, but the IDF said that it crashed on its own.

Israeli soldiers retrieved the drone and the military will run further inquiry into the incident, the spokesperson said.

A military source told the Walla! news website that the drone was small and was detected immediately upon its launch.

The last time a drone from Gaza penetrated the Israeli territory was during the latest Gaza war last summer. The drone was then intercepted by a Patriot missile battery in the southern coastal city of Ashdod.

Despite a relative calm in southern Israel and the Gaza Strip since the war ended in a temporary ceasefire in last August, several sporadic rockets have been launched towards southern Israeli communities from the Strip. Endit
