World's smallest leadless pacemaker first implanted in Brunei

Xinhua, June 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Brunei's first Micra leadless pacemakers, the world's smallest and wireless pacemakers, have been successfully implanted on two heart disease patients in the Gleneagles Jerudong Park Medical Center (GJPMC), the state-run Radio Television Brunei (RTB) reported on Thursday.

RTB said Brunei is the second country in the Asia Pacific region to implant the Micra leadless pacemaker after its commercial release this month.

According to doctors and specialist cardiologists, this treatment could change the way they treat patients with heart rhythm problems. The Micra leadless pacemaker can function without the need of a wire. In addition, the patients no longer need to have a scar on the chest which may reduce the duration of the recovery process.

The two patients undergone the treatment using the pacemakers are Dayang Etty Ediana binti Haji Kassim, aged 38 years and 85- year-old Awang Salleh bin Tundak. Endi
