The European Union (EU) agreed on Wednesday to give 34 million euros (38.13 million U.S. dollars) to Lebanon to support the Arab country's national stability and help protect its maritime resources.
Two funding agreements were signed by Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn and Lebanon's head of the Construction and Development Nabil Jisr, according to Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA).
The first donation is geared toward helping Lebanon's security forces secure the border, control the influx of immigrants, facilitate trade and fight organized crimes, the EU commissioner said.
He added that the second donation is aimed at the protection and sustainable development of the country's maritime resources.
"It is a great day for European Union-Lebanon partnership," Hahn said following the signing of the two agreements.
He noted that the EU is deeply concerned with the heavy burden Lebanon is bearing because of the Syrian crisis.
"With over 1.1 million refugees, the EU has provided half a billion euros only to Lebanon just from the EU budget," he pointed out. Endit
