France's monthly jobless up by 0.5 pct in May

Xinhua, June 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

The number of unemployed people in mainland France grew by 0.5 percent in May compared to April, official figures showed Wednesday.

According to the Labor Ministry's monthly report, the total number of jobseekers increased by 16,200 to more than 3.552 million, for the fourth consecutive month, casting doubts over the government's credibility to bring down a long-running rise in jobless claims.

On yearly basis, the jobless number rose by 5 percent, it added.

Despite thousands of state-subsidized job contracts aimed at encouraging the recruitment of young and poorly qualified unemployed people, the number of jobless youths was up by 0.9 percent, while 847 more old people entered the local labor market in May, up by 0.9 percent from a month earlier, the report showed.

In its recent report, the national statistics institute, Insee, forecast that the unemployment rate would stabilize by the end of year at 10.4 percent, but "unemployment might even fall if older jobseekers continue to feel discouraged." Enditem
