Nikkei ends 0.54 pct higher in morning on hopes for Greek debt deal

Tokyo stocks rose 0.54 percent in the morning session of Wednesday, amid perceptions that Greece is likely to clinch a deal with its creditors to avert a default and an exit from the eurozone.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 112.58 points, from Tuesday to end the morning at 20,922.00, having risen at one point to 20,942.07. It was the highest intraday level since Dec. 6, 1996.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 7.13 points, or 0.43 percent, at 1,683. 53.

Gainers were led by securities, nonferrous metals and shipping issues. Endi
