"Fabian Frei was a desired candidate in case something would change in our squad. We are pleased that we have won him him for us. With his signing we get a defensive as well as offensive experienced midfielder who has strategic qualities and a very good game overview. We are convinced that he fits perfectly into our team," Mainz' manager Christian Heidel said.

The 26-year-old midfielder played since 2007 for FC Basel, including a two-year loan spell in St. Gallen. He made overall 235 top-flight appearances to provide 42 assists and 29 goals. Frei also gained international experience as he played 23 UEFA Champions League and 24 UEFA Europa League games.

"I am happy that the transfer worked out smoothly. I am really looking forward to the new challenge, to play every weekend on the Bundesliga level," Frei told the club's official homepage.
