Polish parliament speaker resigns

Xinhua, June 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Radoslaw Sikorski, speaker of the Lower Chamber of Polish Parliament, officially resigned from the post on Tuesday.

This decision is a result of a recording scandal that has severely rocked Poland's ruling Civic Platform party. The eavesdropping scandal also led to the resignation of three ministers earlier this month.

Radoslaw Sikorski declared on June 10 that he would resign after his testimonies in an investigation concerning the eavesdropping of top-level Polish politicians in 2013 and 2014 came to light.

The Civic Platform party's candidate for the vacant post is Malgorzata Kidawa-Blonska, the current government's spokesman. The Polish People's party is considering the nomination of their own candidate, while the Democratic Left Alliance party's candidate is Jerzy Wenderlich, vice parliamentary speaker.

On Tuesday afternoon, the decision-making Council of Seniors is expected to hold a meeting to decide on the new parliamentary speaker. Endi
