CLMV countries reaffirm commitment to economic cooperation

CLMV (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam) countries reaffirmed their commitment Monday to further strengthening economic cooperation sectorwise and cooperation for peace, stability and prosperity in Southeast Asia.

To promote trade and investment, a joint statement of the 7th CLMV Summit, issued in Nay Pyi Taw, reiterated CLMV countries' commitment to implementing all existing agreements between and among CLMV countries, encouraging the maximum use of the Lao- Myanmar friendship bridge which was officially opened early this year.

The summit agreed that the Single Stop Inspection at the international border checkpoints Dansavan (Laos)- Lao Bao (Vietnam) should be expanded and implemented between CLMV countries to enable emergence of a network of such single stop inspection checkpoints to facilitate trade, investment, tourism and transportation.

In transport cooperation, the CLMV leaders agreed to deepen coordination to make use of economic corridors across CLMV countries under the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) cooperation.

In agriculture, industry, energy, information and communication technology (ICT) cooperation, CLMV leaders agreed to mutually facilitate investment through relevant investment incentives in such important areas as SME development, mineral exploitation, renewable energy, sustainable hydropower development and oil and gas exploration.

In tourism cooperation, the CLMV leaders called on international organizations and financial institutions and other development partners to support the sustainable, responsible tourism development and in particular the capacity building in tourism industries of CLMV countries and encourage the private sector to more actively involve in tourist development process.

The statement set Myanmar to host the 3rd meeting of CLMV tourism ministers on July 28 this year.

In human resources development, the CLMV leaders requested Vietnam to continue providing CLMV scholarship scheme, agreeing to work with various development partners in conducting vocational training and skill development programs.

CLMV leaders reaffrimed their commitment to closely cooperating in accelerating ASEAN's integration efforts.

The summit designated Vietnam to host the next 8th CLMV Summit.

Present at the CLMV summit were Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Lao Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong, Myanmar President U Thein Sein and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

CLMV summit is held biannually and the two summits have combined since 2008 in Vietnam. Endi
