Vietnam targets 10-15 Olympic seats

Xinhua, June 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Vietnam aims to grab 10-15 slots at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in shooting, athletics, swimming, gymnastics, fencing and weightlifting, Vietnam News Agency on Monday quoted its General Department of Sports and Physical Training as reporting.

Four Vietnamese athletes have so far qualified for the Rio Games, including two marksmen Hoang Xuan Vinh and Tran Quoc Cuong, swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien and field athlete Nguyen Thi Huyen.

The four won tickets to the Olympics next summer thanks to their outstanding performance at the 28th Southeast Asia (SEA) Games recently held in Singapore.

Nguyen Thi Huyen brought home two golds in individual events, women's 400m hurdles and women's 400m, and one gold in the 4x400m relay.

Anh Vien won unprecedented eight golds, and one silver and one bronze, and set eight records, an unprecedented feat in Vietnam's sporting history. Her records at the games exceed three A standards of the world championships for women's 400-meter freestyle, women's 200-meter individual medley and women's 400-meter individual medley events.

Anh Vien said she will be even more competitive at the world championships in Russia next month. Endi
