Malawi invites Uganda for soccer friendly to celebrate Independence

Xinhua, June 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

Malawi's Football Federation has invited Uganda to send the national football team for an international friendly slated for July 6 in Lilongwe.

Decolas Kiiza, the Uganda FA Head of Finance told Xinhua on Sunday that they received the invitation from Malawi and will send the team.

"We are only waiting for them to send us the air tickets. Yes we shall travel for the game," said Kiiza.

The Malawi Flames will also use the game to tune up for their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) second qualifier and also as part of the activities to commemorate their Independence Day.

Kiiza said after FIFA called off the international friendly against Kazakhstan last week it was good that the national team will have another chance to test the players ahead of many international engagements.

Head coach Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic told Xinhua that he is glad several invitations keep coming through.

"This is good news because it gives our players chance to get more mileage in their legs in competitive international matches," added the coach.

Uganda have made good starts in three competitions this year with the U-20 team one hurdle away from qualifying for the CAF U-20 Championship, the senior Cranes beating Botswana 2-0 in the first game of the 2017 Afcon qualifier and the Cranes home based team humbling Tanzania 3-0 in the first leg of the 2016 Africa Nations Championship qualifier.
