Israeli soldier stabbed by Palestinian in Jerusalem

Xinhua, June 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

An Israeli paramilitary Border Police soldier was stabbed and seriously injured by a Palestinian youth outside Jerusalem's Damascus Gate of Old City on Sunday, Israeli police said.

The soldier was evacuated to hospital in a critical condition with a stab wound in his neck, Israel's rescue service said in a statement.

A police spokesperson said that the suspect, an 18-year-old youth from the West Bank, was shot at the scene by the policeman. Initial reports said the suspect was killed but later a statement by the Hadassah Medical Center said that he was brought to hospital and taken into the operations room.

The incident came two days after a Palestinian sniper shot and killed an Israeli and wounded another one near the Jewish settlement of Dolev in the West Bank.

Violent incidents between Israelis and Palestinians have been on the rise since the U.S.-brokered peace talks collapsed last April.

There have been dozens of militant attacks by Palestinians against Israelis, mainly in Jerusalem, claiming Israeli lives, along with Palestinian casualties from the frequent clashes between the Palestinians and the Israeli security forces. Endit
