The Afghan security forces recaptured Yamgan district in the northeastern Badakhshan province on Sunday, deputy to provincial governor Gul Mohammad Bedar said.
"The government forces after heavy fighting dislodged the armed insurgents from Yamgan district today and restored government control there," Bedar told Xinhua.
Yamgan district was captured by Taliban militants two weeks ago, forcing the government forces to retreat.
The Taliban militants after suffering huge casualties fled the area and the government troops entered the district at around 8:00 a.m. local time (0330 GMT), according to Bedar.
The Taliban has yet to make comment. Endi
