Myanmar's Yangon regional parliament on Friday approved seven modern housing expansion projects of the Greater Yangon Development Strategic Plan-2040, submitted by Yangon Mayor U Hla Myint.
Designed by the Yangon regional government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the long-term seven- project plan, covered by the Greater Yangon Development Strategic Plan- 2040, will be implemented on over 48,000 hectares of land on the outskirts of Yangon with the investment of 8.177 billion Kyats (7.434 billion U.S. dollars) and will accommodate more than 10 million people.
The Greater Yangon Development Strategic Plan- 2040 will be implemented phase by phase giving priorities to establishment of new town in Yangon-East, followed by that in the southwest, Thanlyin, Dala, Htantapin, Hmawbe and Hlegu, according to U Hla Myint.
Parliament members seconded the plan calling for establishment of the new towns to help local people and address the rising population in Yangon which has more than five million people and is experiencing annual increase of 2.6 percent.
The development project, first introduced in August last year, was blamed for lacking transparency and was suspended in September.
The existing Yangon city has a population of over 6 million and an area of 795 square kilometers. Endi
