Four teams advance to wrap up group stage of WCup

Xinhua, June 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Brazil became the second team to pocket all three wins in the group after beat Costa Rica 1-0 on Wednesday when the group stage of the 2015 Canada Women's World Cup was concluded with four more qualifying teams.

Thanks to a 83-minute goal from Raquel, Brazil joined Japan as the only teams with maximum points in the group stage and finished first in Group E at Moncton.

In another Group E game at Ottawa, South Korea bravely beat Spain 2-1 and earned them a berth in the last 16.

Also in Ottawa, France proved as the best team in Group F as they crushed Mexico 5-0 to finish atop with six points. England, which also had two wins on six points, beat Colombia 2-1 and took the second place for advancing.

Sweden, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Colombia finished as the best four third-placed teams to qualify for the knock-out round.

Resting several starters after already clinching the first place in the group, Brazil could not get past Costa Rica's goalkeeper Dinnia Diaz until seven minutes from time when Raquel slotted home with a cool drive.

South Korea made the miracle happen as they trailed 1-0 in the first half after Veronica Boquete side-footed home in the 30th minute.

After a lack-luster first 45 minutes, the South Koreans came back in the second half with Cho Soyun heading home for the equalizer in the 53rd minute.

Kim Sooyun cut through in the right side and crossed to the middle after 78 minutes, but the ball curled and flied over goalkeeper into the net, to give the South Koreans a crucial win.

In Moncton, France came alive after a 2-0 upset by Colombia, as Marie Laure Delie started the gala only 35 seconds into the game, scoring from a deflection from Alina Garciamendez.

Eugenie Le Sommer hit the target twice, with Wendie Renard and Amandine Henry completing the demolition for France.

While England saw them easily lead 2-0 after Koren Carney and Fara Williams scored in the first half, Lady Andrade scored a consolation goal in the injury time for Colombia.

The knock-out round starts on June 20. Endi
