Xinhua, June 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

Multiple people were shot by a gunman Wednesday night in Charleston, South Carolina, at one of the most prominent African-American churches in the United States, local police said.

According to Charleston police department spokesman Charles Francis, the shooting happened around 9 p.m. local time at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and the police were still searching for a suspect. Further details about victims were not immediately available.

In its twitter account, the Charleston police department described the suspect as a 21-year-old slender and clean shaven white man.

Local media earlier reported that as many as eight people may have been shot and some shots may have been fatal.

Built in 1891, the church has one of the largest black congregations in the region, said the website for the church. Endit
