EU calls for efforts to make Paris climate change talks successful

Xinhua, June 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini here on Wednesday called for efforts to make the global climate change talks in Paris successful.

She made the call in a message released by the European External Action Service, as June 17 marked European Climate Diplomacy Day.

Noting the year of 2015 is a decisive year for climate negotiations, she said "this Climate diplomacy day is an opportunity we cannot miss."

She said that the increasing scarcity of natural resources is becoming a major source of conflict and instability. In today's wars, a dam is at times more strategic than an oil refinery. Floods and droughts can force the entire population to leave their homes and put their lives in the hands of human traffickers.

Mogherini said european embassies around the globe will use Climate Diplomacy Day to reach out to their partners, the general public, business community and civil society organizations. And reducing greenhouse emissions called for a truly global alliance.

It was the second time for the European side to celebrate Climate Diplomacy Day, which aims to raise awareness for climate change and the need for joint action. Endit
