UAE pardons 734 prisoners in Dubai ahead of Ramadan

Xinhua, June 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

United Arab Emirates (UAE) Vice- President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum ordered on Wednesday pardon to 734 prisoners in Dubai ahead of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, state news agency WAM reported.

Dubai Attorney General Issam Al-Humaidan was quoted as saying that the Public Prosecution has immediately started the legal procedures to implement Sheikh Mohammed's order, in collaboration with Dubai Police.

The decision is a gesture from Sheikh Mohammed, who is also the prime minister and ruler of Dubai, to make released prisoners reunited with their families and to give them a new chance to join the community, Al-Humaidan added.

Pardoning inmates is a common move by Arab leaders before Ramadan, the spiritual month in the Islamic moon calendar, which will start on Thursday.

On Tuesday, UAE President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan granted a pardon to 879 inmates across the UAE and ordered the settlement of their outstanding financial liabilities for which they were jailed. Enditem
