Indonesia to take action against IS recruitment

Xinhua, June 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Indonesian government has stressed to carry out an investigation to find out those recruiting Indonesian citizens to join the radical group Islamic State (IS).

Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Wednesday stressed that he would ask related ministries and government institutions to undertake the tasks, according to Teten Masduki, a member of communication team of presidential office.

The president would also order the ministries and the institutions to conduct supervision on the funds from overseas through illegal channels to groups of communities in the country, which are suspected to be used for financing the journey of those recruited to Syria to join the IS group, Masduki said.

President Widodo made the statement during a meeting with Islamic organizations, including the Nahdlatul Ulema or NU at the State Palace, which conveyed the action plan.

"The president stated that he would follow it up through the related ministries and the government institutions, said Masduki.

However, the president did not elaborate further on the type of action to be taken.

The Islamic organizations hinted that scores of Indonesian nationals have been recruited to join the IS group in Iraq and Syria.

In March, as many as 32 Indonesian citizens were lost contact in Turkey and were suspected to join the IS group.

The Indonesian government has banned the IS ideology in the country.
