Southern Maltese bay reopens after oil patch removed

Xinhua, June 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Pretty Bay, situated on the Southern region of Maltese island in Birzebbuga, reopened on Tuesday for swimmers as no more oil patch which contaminated the region last week was found in tests.

The tests were conducted by the archipelago's public laboratory on water samples taken from the bay as well as onsite.

The environmental disaster occurred after a container carrying speciality base fluids was hit by machinery at Malta Freeport eight days ago and started leaking. Therefore, Malta's Civil Protection officers had carried out an operation by throwing oil absorbing pads into the water to remove the oil.

The Pretty Bay is by far one of the largest beaches in Malta and has both a rocky area as well as a sandy area in Malta. Enditem
