Malaysia's opposition party breaks up

Xinhua, June 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

Malaysia's opposition party Pakatan Rakyat, or the People's Alliance, has come to an end, Lim Guan Eng, Penang chief minister and secretary-general of Democratic Action Party (DAP), said on Tuesday.

Pakatan Rakyat is a political coalition formed by the People's Justice Party (PKR), Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) and DAP in 2008, which managed to increase its share in the parliament by an additional seven seats and won the popular vote for the first time in the 2013 general election, posing great threat to Malaysia's ruling Barisan Nasional (BN).

Cracks between DAP and PAS grew as the latter pushed for the introduction of an Islamic penal code, and finally led to the split.

Lim said in a statement that the party's Central Executive Committee (CEC) accepted the PAS muktamar or the general assembly' s motion to sever ties with DAP and effectively, that Pakatan Rakyat has ceased to exist.

"As Pakatan Rakyat was formed by the three parties based on consensus and bound by the Common Policy Framework, the PAS Muktamar's motion effectively killed off Pakatan Rakyat. Pakatan Rakyat therefore ceases to exist," he said. Endi
